Clay Shoot 21st November 2021. The Holywell Club joined forces with the Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Assn, Sussex Chapter to created a great day clay shooting for the 30 attendees consisting of masons and non-masons, plus a couple of local celebrities in the guise of Nick Culmer, aka “Animal”, front man of The Anti-Nowhere League and Peter Joannou, the singing barber of Brighton.

The day started in the dark at 6am with David Hopkins, Roger White, Karl Hopper-Young and Andy Chequers along with Martin Sienkiewicz, who managed to sink his Audi TT in a shallow stream and needing a rescue from Karl’s Defender 90. After setting up and retrieving the amphibious Audi we met up with all 30 attendees for a superb breakfast at the Custom Café.

Steve Dixon, Alan Shew and Paul Sorrell, once again, supervised the shooters, and Karl gave the safety brief and set the scene for what was to be a great day, in terms of the (pre ordered) weather and a collection of very nice people coming together to create some fun and excitement. Everyone generously donated their refunds they were due on the day and between the Widows Sons – Sussex and the Holywell Club over £1200 was raised on the morning- very humbling indeed.

Beach Clean 4, Sunday 24th October 2021. Well that certainly blew the cobwebs away – having switched our attention away from our usual beaches, today we met at the Pier and spent some time cleaning the beaches either side and under it. Despite a chill, blustery wind, the weather was kind and stayed dry for us. Hopefully the area now looks a good deal better than when we arrived. The morning was finished off in the customary manner, this time retreating to the Drop in the Ocean Eastbourne Pier for a delicious bacon rolls (or two). Great company as ever.

Beach Clean 3, Sunday 26th September 2021 saw another successful Beach Clean for the Holywell Club on their adopted Beach 6. Karl, accidently found himself ‘leading’ the 10k that was taking place along the front that morning (Hard to tell him apart from the other runners? He is the one with the slightly fuller physique).

Beach Clean 2, Sunday 11th July 2021: We were incredibly lucky with the weather for our second beach clean of the season. The day before had been a washout and the forecast for the day was decidedly bleak.

18 Holywell supporters turned out to spruce up beaches 1-12 at the Holywell end of Eastbourne seafront. It was great to meet with Brethren from a wide range of lodges and particularly pleasing to see wives and partners joining us. We even had an APGM rolling up his sleeves to help.

It was good meeting new people both masonic and non-masonic, and to put the world to right as we combed the beaches for litter. This continued over breakfast at the Holywell Café and we must thank Richard Brewin for accommodating us so well. Although we do not intend these events to be fundraisers, we ended up with a £90 surplus for charity from the breakfast. Looking forward to the next.

It’s the friends we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey.

Sunday 13th June 2021: A great day on the glorious morning at the Holywell Club Clay Shoot held held at Barnhorn Road, (A259.

Great weather was booked and delivered. 30 attended, made up of three groups, 10 shots each, rotating to keep it pacey, 50 shots each in total.

Special thanks to, Paul Sorrell and Stephen Dixon of Widows Sons Masonic Bikers Assn, for providing safety supervision and not forgetting Alan Shew who supervised the third firing point. WBro Lee Norman managed to kill a gun! Russell Higgins, Rogers Son in law made sure we had signs up and clays at the traps. We had Brekka at 8am at the Custom Cafe then across the road for a safety brief at 9am and itinerary for the morning.

The “delightful” Alex Napper won the event and Colin Wells, retired cricketer won the “Barn door” sniper award. We raised a lot of money and left with more friends than we started with, and closer to the ones we knew already.

This event is so successful on many levels, we are planning more.

23 May 2021: The beaches at Holywell, Eastbourne are now spic ‘n span after the Holywell Club’s first Beach Cleaning event. At one stage, because of the inclement weather, we were doubtful the event would take place but fortunately the clouds parted for just a couple of hours. If you are going to use the beaches in that area you are kindly requested to wipe your feet before treading on the pebbles and to change into your slippers

The Holywell Club held its inaugural meeting of their Learning Circle on Tuesday 30^th March 2021, which was attended by 22 Brethren from across the Province from 16 different lodges, plus a couple that joined us from Bedford.

The thinking behind this idea was, with time at regular lodge meeting taken up with business and ceremonies and most Lodge of Instructions being given over to practicing ritual, the opportunity for masonic education and discussion, particularly for new masons, seems very limited.

The content was carefully designed for Entered Apprentices but also to appeal to Fellow Crafts and Master Masons. What was a pleasant surprise was the number of Past Masters that attended. I guess you are never too old to learn.

It was great fun and a real pleasure to meet with a group of genuinely nice people.

December 6th – 20th. Normally at this time, The Holywell Club, would be putting on their annual Children’s Christmas Party but determined to keep the magic of Christmas alive we went online with a series of virtual zoom visits to Santa. These proved extremely popular, mainly with Freemasons booking slots for their Grandchildren. In some cases this was a great opportunity for them to share a visit to Santa with family from other parts of the country. We took particular pleasure in visits to some of the pupils from Downsview School in Brighton who, through enforced isolation, had missed Santa’s visit to the school.

18 Nov 2020: A really good turn out for our Holywell Q&A Zoom event tonight aimed at our new members, those waiting to be initiated and those just thinking about joining. After an excellent presentation by W.Bro. Bob Lewis ably assisted by Graham Turner, lots of questions were asked and answered with the help of a few other seasoned members. Of the 40 attending 15 were potential members or candidates awaiting initiation. An event well worth repeating.

**Holywell Club adopts Holywell Beach 26 Oct 2020**

The Holywell Club are proud to be doing their bit for the Plastic Free Eastbourne campaign by adopting Beach No 6 situated at Holywell. Our aim is to carry out regular beach clean on our stretch of the coastline, not only removing plastic waste found but any discarded items.

We are planning to make our Breakfast & Beach Cleans a regular event in our future programmes

On 22 Oct 2020, Sussex Freemasons were treated to an informative and thought-provoking talk by W Bro. Tony Harvey, hosted by the Holywell Club, on the subject of Expectations. Tony, the architect of the Members Pathway programme and an experienced Prestonian lecturer, covered a wide range of related topics from mutual expectations, member’s satisfaction, unmasonic behaviour, flexibility and adaptation and roles in the lodge.

The talk was designed to promote a forward –thinking approach to Freemasonry, the evolution of Lodge practices without destroying our fundamental meaning and purpose. Judging by the questions raised in the Q&A session that followed, the talk certainly had a positive impact upon those present. Participants were left pondering how to take some of the points raised back to their own lodges.
